Simpson Springs

Lookout Station (7.5) to Simpson Springs Station (23.4)

Keep heading west down the road into Skull Valley.  You are entering what was referred to as “Piute Hell.”   Just stay on the main road that heads southwest.  Follow signs that point to Simpson Springs or the Pony Express Trail.   Keep your eye out for 4-foot cement posts on the left-hand side of the road that mark the actual Pony Express Trail.  After about 5 miles along this road in the valley, it turns west at Government Creek (15.9).  Porter Rockwell had his ranch here.  In about four miles there will be an intersection, the main road continues south to Simpson Springs.  You arrive at Simpson Springs (23.4) in 3.4 miles.  The Pony Express station has been reconstructed here.

Simpson Springs Campground (23.4) to Dugway Pass (44.5)

From Simpson Springs take the Simpson Springs-Callao road heading straight southwest -- straight as can be.  Keep your eye out for the skinny cement posts near the road every mile.  Most of the posts near the road are very vandalized.  After about 7 miles the road will descend down into an ancient riverbed.  The Riverbed Station (31.5) is across the bottom on the north.  The monument is off the main road a little bit.  After another nine miles of straight road, you will come to an intersection at: N'39,53.069'  W113,01.768'.  This is Dugway Topaz Well (40.3).  There is a shack and a silo on the southeast side of this intersection.  Keeping heading on the main road heading west.   In the daylight, with a keen eye, you can look south and see the Dugway Station monument off in the desert.  Continue on climb up to Dugway Pass (44.5).

Road down from Dugway Pass

Blackrock Station Monument

Fish Springs

Dugway Pass (44.5) to Fish Springs (65.2)

Go over the pass and head down into a beautiful valley.  Just stay on the main road, heading west.  You will pass by the turnoff for the Dugway Geode Beds (mile 47.9).  At mile 53.1, the road will swing to the northwest and curve around a hill.  You will come to the Black Rock Station (55.5). Stay on the main road heading west toward Fish Springs.  You will come to the marshes and lakes of Fish Springs.  Head toward Fish Springs Headquarters (65.2).   Fish Springs is a cool place for bird watching.

Fish Springs (65.2) to Boyd Station (79.0)

Continue on the main road heading north past Fish Springs.   In about 0.9 mile you will pass by the Fish Springs Pony Express Station monument on the right.   The road will continue and make a huge curve around to the west and to the south.   Just stay on the main road.  You will be able to see the lights of Callao far to the west.   The road will eventually head west again and in 3.3 more miles, you will pass arrive at Boyd Station (79.0) on your right.

Boyd Station (65.2) to Willow Springs Station (Callao) (88.9)

Continue heading west on the main road.   Look a little north and you should be able to see the old Pony Express and Stage Coach trail that runs about a half mile or more to the north.   Keep heading toward the town of Callao.   Once in town the road will turn north, turn west, turn north and west again.   On the last turn west, you will pass by the Willow Springs Station monument (88.9).

Willow Springs Station (Callao) (88.9) to Finish (100)

From the Willow Springs Station monument, continue on the main road heading west.   In 0.6 miles, you come to an intersection.  Turn right, heading north on the Pony Express Road.   Continue on this road for 4.1 miles until reaching intersection for the Overland Canyon Road.   At this point we will NOT follow the Pony Express trail up into Overland Canyon Road (a tough climb).   Instead, we will finish the course by continuing straight on the road toward Gold Hill.   Crews, note your odometer mileage at this point!  Continue on this road (Callao Rd) for 6.5 more miles.   The finish may not be marked, so please have you crew tell you where the finish is.   It is 6.5 miles past this intersection.
